What kind of therapists and counselors work here? Train here?
There are numerous training programs and credentials available for those licensed to practice psychotherapy. The field of therapy includes family therapists, relational and couple therapists, sex therapists, clinical social workers, psychologists, and professional counselors. We value the diverse experiences and skills each degree and training contributes to meeting the needs of our community.
As one of the few training facilities focused on professional counselor (LMHC) development, we recognize that counselors often view clients as individuals who are already whole. Our approach emphasizes the whole-person experience rather than focusing solely on pathology. Social justice, advocacy, tolerance for multiple points of view and equity work are foundational ethical principles for licensed counselors.
We believe a strong and skilled team of helpers is essential to address the needs of our community. Therefore, we welcome professionals from other disciplines whose clinical training aligns with current mental health counselor standards.
How does the training element of the institute impact clients?
As a client, you have the freedom to choose your level of comfort here. You may decide to allow live supervision of your sessions or consent to video recordings for educational purposes. Alternatively, you can choose to have no interactions with anyone other than your clinician, and we will fully respect that choice. Your privacy is our top priority, and we have measures in place to protect your identity and treatment information. If you're open to live supervision, please discuss it with clinician or Phoenix during your meeting. Rest assured, intake sessions will never be observed. For those who agree to live supervision experiences, you will meet the clinicians and supervisor observing your sessions beforehand. While being observed can feel vulnerable, it serves as a valuable growth opportunity for the supervisor-in-training and the clinician-in-training, who is advancing their skills. Supervision is structured exclusively around the therapist and supervisor's effectiveness and not on the client's content or stories.
We utilize "en-vivo" supervision for clinicians working on integrating advanced techniques. This allows for a collaborative approach to treatment and research demonstrates that this is an effective, developmentally appropriate training technique for clinicians at this level of development. If a clinician encounters challenges, they can rely on supportive team of trained colleagues.
If you choose to opt-out, you will still benefit from the Ruby Institute’s commitment to supervision, self-reflection and innovative therapist training.
Do you treat trauma?
We have advanced training in helping people who have experienced either a single traumatic event or multiple, complex and/or developmental traumas in their lives. We work with people trying to navigate systems that cause harm and affect mental health. We recognize these attempts to live with dignity, while being discriminated against, threatened, humiliated, and targeted by people and structures to be culturally-born, within a context that includes people doing the best with what they have access to.
Working with survivors of traumatic experiences is an honor. Unfortunately, many beginning therapists are not given the appropriate frameworks or skills to effectively support traumatized persons while they are students. The Ruby Institute seeks to bring excellent trauma-informed training through the observation supervision model, which gives counselors access to the application of theoretical models in addition to the benefit of watching specific protocol and interventions occur in real-time with seasoned counselors. Clinicians who approach trauma counseling will be supportively and responsively supervised by the institute's clinical director to ensure clients are given the best possible mental health care.
